International Youth Day: Empowering Youth for a Sustainable Future

“Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires a seismic shift – which can only happen if we empower young people and work with them as equals.” – UN Secretary-General António Guterres

As we celebrate International Youth Day on August 12th, the world is reminded of the pivotal role young people play in shaping a sustainable future. This year's theme, "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development," underscores the transformative power of digital technology in advancing global goals. With three-quarters of those aged 15 to 24 using the internet in 2022, young people are leading the charge in digital innovation, harnessing technology to drive meaningful change.

However, the digital divide persists, particularly in low-income regions and among young women, who often face barriers to accessing the internet and developing digital skills. Despite these challenges, youth are recognized as "digital natives," utilizing technology to address global issues and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Survey shows that 67% of people believe in a better future, with 15- to 17-year-olds being the most optimistic about this.

The Impact of WorldEd Foundation's BetterFutures Program

At the WorldEd Foundation, we are committed to empowering youth through our BetterFutures program, which aligns with the UN SDGs to create a sustainable and equitable future. Through initiatives such as the United Voices Project, the Sustainability & Human Rights Workshop, and the Skills for the Future Workshop, we provide young people with the tools and knowledge they need to become global citizens and leaders.

  • United Voices Project: Promoting inclusion, understanding, and tolerance among students aged 13-17, this project addresses racism and stereotypes, encouraging youth to embrace diversity and build a more inclusive world.

  • Sustainability & Human Rights Workshop: In collaboration with the Girls Global Ready Program, this workshop empowers young leaders to make a lasting impact by combining sustainability with universal human rights principles.

  • Skills for the Future Workshop: As technology and innovation reshape job roles, our workshop equips youth with essential soft skills like communication, critical thinking, and adaptability, preparing them for the dynamic future workplace.

A Call to Action

As we reflect on the significance of International Youth Day, it's clear that empowering young people is not just an option—it's a necessity. By supporting youth in their digital endeavors and ensuring equal access to technology, we can accelerate progress toward sustainable development.

Join us at the WorldEd Foundation in our mission to expand educational opportunities, foster innovation, and promote inclusivity. Together, we can create a better future for all.

Question: How can we further bridge the digital divide to ensure that all young people, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to contribute to a sustainable future?
