Teaching Kindness: Students from Eryaman Şehit Ertan Akgül Anadolu Lisesi Champion Quality Education

editorial team

In the spirit of the Hearts of Kindness Campaign, the students of Eryaman Şehit Ertan Akgül Anadolu Lisesi took a bold step towards fostering SDG 4: Quality Education through acts of kindness. Recognizing that education is a fundamental right, they focused on addressing the less-discussed yet pervasive barrier to quality learning: bullying.

What is Quality Education?

Quality education means ensuring that every child—regardless of gender, ability, or background—has access to free, inclusive, and equitable education. Beyond academic excellence, it emphasizes creating a safe and supportive environment where all students can thrive, free from discrimination, sexism, or violence.

Why Focus on Quality Education?

The students chose this goal because, as learners themselves, they intimately understand the challenges bullying presents. They noticed how unkind behavior, even among friends, can disrupt education and diminish students’ confidence. They also observed that younger children often lack exposure to the value of kindness, and they wanted to make a difference.

Their Kindness Initiative

With their teacher’s guidance, the students organized a meaningful day at a local elementary school, aiming to teach children about kindness and its role in creating a positive educational environment.

Activities and Impact

  • Classroom Discussions on Kindness

    • The students engaged the children in conversations about kindness, asking them to share examples of kind acts they had experienced or performed.

    • They emphasized how small gestures, such as a smile or kind words, can significantly impact someone’s day.

  • Creative Expression through Art

    • The children were encouraged to draw pictures of what kindness means to them or how they feel when they act kindly. These drawings captured the innocent and profound understanding of compassion.

  • Interactive Theater Play

    • The students wrote and performed a play about three heroes searching for the “Heart of Kindness.” Along their journey, the heroes helped others, learning lessons about forgiveness, sharing, empathy, and refraining from judgment.

    • This engaging and entertaining activity taught the children values in a memorable and fun way.

  • Dancing and Conversations

    • The day ended with joyful dancing and a Q&A session, further deepening the connection between the students and children.

The Power of Kindness in Education

By teaching younger children to be kind, the students demonstrated how small actions could transform educational environments. They showed that kindness not only fosters inclusion but also empowers students to stand up against bullying, ensuring that everyone enjoys a peaceful and supportive learning journey.

A Ripple Effect of Goodness

The students hoped their efforts would leave a lasting impression on the children, inspiring them to carry the message of kindness forward. Whether it’s smiling at someone, standing up for a friend, or simply listening, these acts can ripple through classrooms, schools, and communities, creating a culture of respect and empathy.

A Beacon of Hope

The initiative from Eryaman Şehit Ertan Akgül Anadolu Lisesi is a testament to how youth can drive meaningful change. They proved that kindness, when rooted in education, can create a world where every child feels valued and supported.

Let us take inspiration from their journey and remember: the smallest acts of kindness can spark the brightest flames of hope.
